IMG_6235Simplicity. By definition, this term in itself is simple, “freedom from complexity or intricacy”. Simple, right?

It is not until you try to embody simplicity that it actually becomes more of a challenge. It is easy to get caught up in the complexity of life. Fortunately, I was just able to step outside of the chaos and simply live. What I mean by this is being able to take time from your day to slow down and appreciate the beauty of your world, the people in it, and yourself. Once you successfully accomplish this state of presence in life, I believe you will achieve a more complete sense of fulfillment and joy in everything you do.IMG_6371

Recently, I had the privilege of traveling to Costa Rica for three weeks. While there, I adventured around a bit spending time in Nosara, Monteverde, and Tamarindo. While I had a completely different experience in each town, all three places seemed to have something in common – simplicity. The locals, or ‘ticos’ in Costa Rica live simply, truly living day by day. To us, whomever you may be; a parent, a son or daughter, a millennial, etc., ‘tico’ is most likely not a word you would identify with. Let me give you a better idea of exactly what a day for a tico might look like.   IMG_6466

First of all, no alarm. While on some rare occasions, they will set an alarm, most days they wake up with the sun. The sun rises around 5AM and this is when most people will commence their day with either a morning surf or yoga session. Already off on the right foot and its only just time for breakfast. During the day, just like us, ticos go to work. The difference there is that they are working at something they love. Whether it be shaping boards, giving tours, or selling fresh fruit, they all love what they do. Then as the sun begins to set, everyone goes home to their families and enjoys time with the people they love.

Rest and repeat. IMG_6324

Start your day off with something that you live for, whatever it may be; yoga, journaling, listening to music, or going for a run. No matter what your passion is, take the time to start your day with something that brings you joy and clears your head. Often times we find ourselves using the things we love as rewards or run out of time in the day and skip out on our passions all together. Make time for whatever it may be that makes your heart happy. Life is short so you cannot be afraid to be selfish, do what you love (and work hard) and the rest will fall into place.

It is easy to get caught up in the rush of life and succumb to a daily routine. We have all fallen guilty to this lifestyle at some point. However, if you can become aware of all life has to offer in its simplest form, I can guarantee you will lead a content life. It’s simple: Take time for yourself, do what you love, and appreciate your life and the life around you.
