What is the name of your / the business and social media handle?
How did the name come about and how long have you been here?
“It’s a long story. We pretty much ran through every word you could put in front of coffee, street coffee, curb coffee … someone said sticky bumps coffee which led to sticky coffee or bumps coffee. We liked how bumps coffee sounded, we shortened it to BUMP coffee and said, that’s it! The name holds character and appeal. It’s easy to remember, which is good for branding. BUMP triggers different things for different people. One woman said, ‘it reminds me of my baby bump.’ Others say, ‘BUMP is like the burst of energy you get from coffee.’ The brand itself is meant to appeal to everyone and has sort of taken on it’s own character. We started out doing Farmers Markets 5 times a week all over North County and we had a one bedroom apartment full of coffee and supplies. Once we got a booth at the Little Italy market we were able to only do that market which afforded us more time to focus on growing our brand. We got the BUMP truck 1 ½ years ago but we’ve been in the Cardiff area for 4 ½ years now.”
What is your role at the company?
“We’re the owners and Phil Lyon is the third component of BUMP. We do everything. Ryan and I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area together and Ryan and Phil met in college at Long Beach State. Between the three of us, we share all the responsibility. It really is a team effort.”
What is your favorite thing about the business?
“Freedom! There is nothing looming over us. We have the time to enjoy the things we love in life.”
What’s the best part about being in Cardiff?
“The surf! And the people, it’s really all about the people. It’s got a small town feel to it. Really, all of San Diego is that way.”
How do you feel your business reflects / fits in the community?
“We felt that there was a need for this type of business. We promote an on the go, healthy lifestyle and combine it with high quality products. Connecting the two is important. Some of the businesses moving into town have been missing out on tapping into the culture we have here. Growing up riding BMX, skating, surfing and snowboarding, we wanted to reach the individuals who share that same type of passion. Cardiff holds that vibe and BUMP really holds that community based influence. We want it to be for the local people first, they make Cardiff! And having respect for them is important to us.”
Do you know about BLOC and what we’re about?
“Yeah, we do! We used to park down by your previous BLOC location down by Haggos Organic Tacos.”
Knowing more about us, is there a way for us to collaborate / work together?
“We would love to get our cold brew on tap over at BLOC. We already sell BUMP coffee beans in your Locals Market but we would love to talk more. We feel as though we are like-minded in our purpose of supporting community culture.”
Do you have anything exciting coming up in the future?
“Right now we are in our soft opening but we are planning an official Grand Opening party. We will keep you posted!”
Did you always see yourself doing something like this?
“Yeah, not necessarily coffee but for sure owning our own business. It was important to have the freedom to surf when we wanted to. To have a job that allows you to do the things you LOVE to do was key. We just picked one part of life to focus on that we liked, the mornings. Now we have the whole afternoon to do whatever we want.”
What was your first or most memorable job?
Trevor: “The typical yard work for family and neighbors. And I also acted as a camp counselor at the High School I went to.”
Ryan: “It was at BIG 5. Haha, I remember they used to make me wear a shirt and tie to sell sporting gear. It was pretty ridiculous. Then there was mowing my grandmother’s yard.”
What advice would you give your sixteen year old self?
Trevor: “Study harder for sure.”
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be?Trevor: “Tacos!”Ryan: “Hmm, Bacon or Mangos.”
Anything else we should know about the BUMP?“We would love for everyone to stop by. Everything we serve is of high quality, it’s organic and fresh. You have to try our fresh squeezed OJ! Basically, we serve what we would want to eat or drink. It’s simple, easy to choose, easy to order, easy to pay. What you see is what you get. BUMP is also about the experience, there is no wifi because we want people to connect and experience that sense of community … Come in Stoked and leave even more Stoked! People are already excited to come here, it’s taken on the nickname of ‘The Froth Spot’.”
